I recently learned something, being nice while lying can save you money. Who Knew? In my never-ending quixotic quest to lower my totally overpriced phone, Internet and cable bill, I decided to search the web for the best deals. And it pays to check often cuz the rates are constantly changing. I found Bundle My Services, a website run by WhiteFence and input my address since not all packages are available in all areas. I found one from Verizon, my current provider, that on the surface seemed about $20 cheaper per month. The savings where mainly due to a better rate from Direct TV. First I phoned Verizon and the customer service rep said the $99 rate I was already getting for their part of the package was their best deal. So I called Direct TV and after a lot of "marke numero dos para espanol, I finally got a human being. I composed myself, choked back the rant about the being ripped off by paying for hundreds of channels that aired mostly reruns and crappy movies, and asked super nice if there was a way to reduce my bill. After a lot of chitchat about the reps daughters, her new grandson, how she used to live in New York, and how my own (imaginary) offspring are such a handful, I got a deal. She offered a 6 month $10 discount for being such a loyal customer and another 3 month promotion on HBO and Cinemax that would cut my bill another $12. Me and the chil’ren thank her.
