Waiting around all day for my shower door delivery only to get a last minute call from the installer saying he couldn’t make it. So with that 11th hour reprieve and no plans I decided to waste my newfound time by going to see the latest installation of the Tyler Perry franchise. I’d seen the original “Why Did I Get Married” on TV and thought it was lame and barely watchable. I swore I wouldn’t see the second go round but movie pickings were slim. Well, I wasn’t expecting Scorsese but Damn! “Why did I get Married …Number A Too” was like number two. Crap. It swung between broad comedy and farce to very serious relationship drama including domestic abuse and debilitating depression. There were some funny scenes in the beginning but when the plot thickened the movie got all preachy and was totally unrealistic. I read that Perry made the movie largely in order to give Janet Jackson a chance to prove she can really act and in fact she did just the opposite. The movie had an ensemble cast and Janet was the weakest link. Everyone else played their specific stereotype well, angry Black woman, bad boy athlete, and Tyler Perry forever the good black man, but I’m not mad at him. He writes and bankrolls the productions so may as well make himself the hero.
