Recently there’s been a bunch of new commercials for Next To
Normal. They start with voiceovers about the dubious entertainment value of a
musical about a mom and coping with bipolar depression and the toll on her family
and end up praising it as the best show EVER! I was skeptical to say the
least. I’d resisted seeing the
multiple Tony winning musical but finally broke down after reading rave reviews
about the new husband and wife team joining the cast, that plus half price TKTS
tickets. From the opening number
the show grabs you and pulls you.
You immediately plug in to the pain and angst of the ups and downs of
bipolar mom, overachieving angry neglected daughter, dad in denial and well,
there’s the dead son…..good times. The
story unfolds and doesn’t shy away from addressing mental illness and the hit
and miss treatment options including talk therapy, psychopharmacology and
electric shock. The raw emotions
are palpable and the voices soar making it surprising and incredible
production. No Debbie Downer here
and two thumbs up for Next To Normal. To save over 50% on tickets:
